Pat Shelso Assistant Coach & Recruiting Coordinator UMD · 2019

About Coach Shelso

Patrick Shelso enters his third season as an assistant coach with the UMD men’s lacrosse program. Shelso joined the Bulldog's lacrosse staff in January 2017 as the team’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

Under Shelso's guidance, the 2018 Bulldogs emerged as one of the nations top offenses averaging 11.33 goals per game, including a season-high 22 in a win against College of Idaho in the first round of the MCLA Tournament. Shelso coached two All-Americans on the attack unit (Scott McNamara and Jared Johnson) and helped developed Blake Barta into a 1st Team All-American face-off specialist. Shelso played a key role in the Bulldogs receiving #3 seed to the MCLA National Tournament and advancing to the Final Four.

In 2017, Shelso’s first year at UMD, the Bulldogs reached the MCLA quarterfinals after a win over SELC champions Florida Gulf Coast University. Shelso coached two All-Americans on the attack and midfield unit (Jared Johnson and Ryan Larson) while helping the team solidify a #1 seed in the UMLC tournament. The Bulldogs averaged 8.3 goals a game in 2017, tallying double digits in five games, including an upset over top-ranked University of St. Thomas in the regular season.

Shelso graduated from UMD with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design in 2015. During his career, Shelso had 104 points (57g, 47a) and earned All-Conference honors as a Junior. In addition to his UMD duties, Shelso works closely with Prior Lake youth lacrosse and is the program director/event coordinator for Lavin Lacrosse Camps.
