Getting Prepared for Games

Well, we got 2 of 3 scheduled weekend practices completed.  You might have heard about the snow that we had on Sunday.  We did get alot done, and we're excited about the improvement some players have shown.  Especially some first-year players.

Defense -  Our defense's conditioning level is better than last year's and the impact of the return of Charlie Nesser cannot be overstated.  Our depth here will be strong as well. I think we're close to naming our goalie starter to the team. I'll caucus with the coaches this week, and make an announcement to the team at an appropriate point.

Midfield - I'm excited about our specialty units - Our D-mids are playing well, as are our LSM's, and our F/O units prepare dilgently, and with intelligence.

Attack - I think the speculation abou the "death" of our offense due to the graduation of Casey Mithun and Scott Wishart may be a bit premature. Let's leave it at that.

I just heard/read about the developments in the SELC coaching group (Coach Lovic announcing his resignation after this season and Coach Harkins' stroke.)  I have the utmost respect for both, and wish the best to both in their paths this season and beyond.

Our recruiting class is almost done. we have about 9 or so committments.  We're awaiting one school decision (admission or not) and 3 committments from admitted student-athletes. Once we get these decisions, we'll make our annoucement.  I've also been contacted by a few "walk-on" players (good players that have decided to come to UMD).  There's always a few of these players that "show up" and really make a difference on the team.  Example A - Nate Goertz.  Just showed up, tried out, and was a starter middy for 4 years, as well as a mainstay on our Man up unit.  Example B - Kevin Gaydos - Another "Just showed up" and won a starting spot last year and has maintained it this year.  There are many others.  At UMD, we care about what you show the coaches.  Past awards/distinctions are nice, but we evaluate what we see on the field and a player's preparation off the field.

Less than one week until an actual game.  I think SCSU's adding Coach Lipkin is a great addition for their program and will make an already competitive squad even better.  We need to be ready to play.
