CHASKA, Minn. - Top-ranked UMD continued their winning streak on Sunday afternoon, defeating the #11 ranked Montana State Bobcats 18-12 at the East Carver County Athletic Center. The game went back-and-forth throughout the four quarters, with UMD holding a slight lead until the end. Eight players scored for UMD in the win. Senior All-American Scott McNamara put away six goals to bring his season total to 22.
Montana State made the trip to the Twin Cities from Bozeman as part of their spring break UMLC tour. Throughout the week they will also play St. Thomas, St. Johns and North Dakota State. The Bobcats have consistently been a top team in MCLA DII, dominating the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference. Last season in the MCLA National Tournament, Montana State took down Dayton in the opening round, before losing to eventual champion NDSU in the second round.
Early in the game, the Bulldogs defense was relentless, playing aggressively and dominating the ground ball game. The offense had trouble scoring to begin but was maintaining possessions with a tough ride. In the second quarter, scoring ramped up and by halftime, the score was 9-6 Bulldogs. The Bobcats crawled back in the third quarter with a series of transition goals. By the fourth quarter, the offense was again rolling adding seven goals for an 18-12 final.
The Bulldogs next competition is in Allendale, Mich., on Sunday, March 31 when they take on the second-ranked Dayton Flyers at 7 a.m. on the campus of Grand Valley State. Later that day UMD will play the MCLA DI Davenport Panthers at noon. That game will be played at Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids, Mich.
